During the planning stage of the REL Class of 1954 50th reunion, Pauline Dickerson and Clydean Martin proposed that the Class start a Scholarship Fund to be presented to members of the 2004 Class of both Robert E. Lee and Ross Sterling High Schools. The students must be enrolled at Lee College during the fall semester. Money would be raised by selling shirts, caps, mugs, etc. at the reunion and a request would be made for donations from the class for this cause. The results were beyond anyone’s expectations.
On August 5, 2004, Joy Ewing, Annette Hernandez, Clydean Martin and Pauline Dickerson, representing the Class of '54, presented a check in the amount of $7000.00 to Dr. Martha Ellis, President of Lee College. The funds will be used for scholarships for graduates of Robert E. Lee or Ross Sterling Chas.’s Class of 2004.
An additional $1000.00 will be paid to the scholarship fund from Bank of America's educational matching funds program at the end of December and in April 2005, a potential $1050.00 will follow from the Exxon Mobil educational matching funds program.
The Scholarship Fund Committee thanks you very much for buying hats and shirts, for dropping your extra coins in the collection jar, for writing your individual checks supporting this project, for accessing your individual matching fund programs and for your very positive thoughts. This unprecedented move by the Class of '54 is something we can all be very proud of.
