| the way. I didn’t know that retirement could be so much fun. 2004: Our two boys are 5 years older like the rest of us. Robert, Jr., 46 lives in Clear Lake and Roger is 43 lives in Pearland. Our grandchildren, Travis is 19 and a sophomore at Texas A&M. Kendall is 16 and a junior in High school and a member of the drill team at Clear Lake High school. Tyler is 7 1/2 and is in the first grade now. We have an addition to our grandchildren who is Emily and is 4 years old. We enjoy our grandchildren and now the little ones keep us hopping when they are around. We are still enjoying our retirement as much as we did when we first retired. Mary is still doing her thing exercising and I am still playing golf 3 days a week when weather permits. Not getting any better at golf, but still enjoying it. We are still traveling and enjoying taking cruises. |

John owns a cabinet shop and builds homes. I retired in ’97 and teach half-time. I am healthy, have good work, a fine family, lots of friends, deep roots in G-town, and a great husband who is lots of fun. | About the Guerard / West names: My birth certificate reads Russell West. When I was two years old my parents divorced. Two years later my mother married George Guerard. I was neither adopted by George Guerard nor was my name officially changed. Nevertheless I was enrolled in the first grade as Russell Guerard and the name stayed with me through graduation from REL. Upon joining the military (summer 1954) I was required to furnish a birth certificate. Consequently my true name, Russell West, became my name of record and has been since. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| intensive course in Russian. It was during this schooling that I was extremely fortunate to marry Ellen McLean, the light of my life for these past 46 years. After graduation from this training, I was sent to a remote site in Alaska for a year. I was then returned to the States (San Antonio) where I served out my AF enlistment and attended the night division at Trinity University where I earned a BA Degree in Zoology and Chemistry. Ellen and I then began to teach in LaPorte. After the first year of teaching, I was selected to attend a summer institute for Russian teachers at Dartmouth College. After two years in LaPorte, we entered the University of Kansas where I earned a Masters Degree in Slavic Languages and a Doctor of Philosophy in Secondary and Higher Education. While at K.U., I also had the opportunity to do Graduate Work at the University of Moscow and the Lenin Library. We then spent almost three years in Washington, D.C., where Ellen taught in the Maryland schools and I worked at the Library of Congress. We finally moved back to Texas and I began to teach at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. During our twelve years there, Ellen completed nearly all the requirements for her doctorate. I went on to earn another Masters Degree in Computer Science from ETSU and did other postdoctoral work toward a Masters of BA in International Management and Marketing. My schooling and professional careers have given me the opportunity to travel and live pretty much all over the world (Europe and Asia) as a consultant and interpreter for various government agencies. Altogether, I have lived and worked in Russia for 5 years, with one-year stints in Slovakia, Malaysia and the Philippines. My education and travels have required me to become fluent in Russian, Spanish, and French, and to learn enough Slovakian and Polish to conduct business. Some of the positons I have held are: 1967-1968; Senior Technical Abstractor, Aerospace Technology Division, Library of Congress Washington, D.C. 1968-1980; Associate Professor, East Texas State University, Commerce, Texas 1980-1985; Manager of Training, Texas Utilities/Basic Resources Inc., Dallas, Texas 1986-1992; Manager of Training, Houston Industries, Houston, Texas 1992-1993; Business Consultant, Telecommunications Industry, Slovakia 1993-1994; University of Maryland/Far Eastern State University, Vladivostok, Russia--Course director for joint University of Maryland/Far Eastern State University business course. Also acted as Ombudsman for non-Russian speaking American faculty. 1995-present; Vice President of CORD International, Waco, Texas. Responsible for developing CORD’s international business. Act as internal consultant and curriculum specialist for international operations, including design and setup of international pilot programs in technical and vocational education in Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, Viet Nam, Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Brunei, Bahrain, and Cambodia. Presently Project Director of Career Prep project in Laguna and Leyte Provinces, Philippines. Hard to put all this down without sounding like a resume but, there it is. As you can see, very little grass has grown under our feet since we left high school. I guess I have always been something of a “geek” and will probably remain that way. Ellen and I have had a lot of fun in what we’ve done and the places we’ve seen and worked in. Ellen has been my constant helpmate—and if we’ve accomplished anything at all in our lives it is to her credit. I went into semi-retirement in January 2004 but am still on consultant status. If things go as planned I’ll be returning to the Philippines in mid-May for another two weeks for teacher-training seminars. Obviously, we love to travel. We have a 32-foot 5th wheeler travel trailer. We spend as much time as possible visiting our two sons and their families. We’re looking forward to taking our three grandkids on a month-long camping trip this summer! Ellen and I are both in good health and enjoying our “semi” retirement. |

Robert Gunn (Shirley) 1609 Old Course Dr., Plano TX 75093 RES: (972) 523-4776 Cell: (972) 523-4776 bobgunn1@tx.rr.com Updated 2002: Went to the University of Texas (with Don Mier (St Martin) as my roommate for one of those years) got nearly 4 years of my life before receiving a degree in Jan. ’58. During that period I married Shirley Ann Post (REL ’54) in June, ’56 and in Sept. ’57 we had a daughter, Pam. Entered the US Air Force in March ’58 as a 2nd Lt. And went to pilot training and graduated from that in ’59 and was on active duty until ’63. I tried the non-flying world for two years before being employed by Braniff International in ’65. That same year R. L., Jr. was born. Things were pretty stable until divorcing in ’79. I also retired from the Texas Air National Guard as a Lt. Col. in 1979. In 1982 Braniff declared bankruptcy and closed the doors. That same year I remarried, again to another Shirley. In ’83 fortune shone on us and I was employed by US Airways and retired as a Captain in ’96 after thirteen years in the beautiful state of North Carolina. At the time we moved to Plano to be closer to family. Several of my classmates were taught by my mother, Blanche Gunn, and she is 96 and lives four blocks from us and is in good health. I look forward to seeing everyone.. |
