Date: 1/11/05
Toby has had treatment for cancer. The following is a note from her:

I have been so moved by the good wishes and prayers for my recovery and have tried  to write a short reply  to everyone. I'm told that I may not be feeling so well as this Chemo progresses,so I wanted to thank everyone for their get well wishes and prayers.  I think they are working.
I have had two surgeries on my arm-that is where the "Merkel" was discovered.  It is an extremely rare form of Cancer and no set treatment  is in place even here at M.D. Anderson.  After the surgeries, I had radiation.  I considered stopping there, but my medical oncologist said that Chemo would give me extra insurance of it not recurring and that was his recommendation.  I decided that a few months of miserey was worth the insurance against it recurring.
So that's what I am doing. My survival chances are very good and I plan to be at the next Reunion!!.
Thank you all again and my best wishes for a healthy and happy 2005.

Tobye

Wanda Price-Hamann
Date: 8/19/04

Our classmate Wanda Price-Hamann and her husband, Les, have been going through some trying times lately.
Wanda had a heart attack just prior to our reunion, which she wanted to attend having worked on the Reunion Committee.  About that time her husband, Les, was diagnosed with cancer of the hip.  Then Wanda had a Pacemaker implanted and is going though rehab.
Finally some good news. Les' problem turned out to be arthritis, NOT cancer. The ball socket in his left his is collapsed and he's scheduled for a hip replacement Aug. 27th.  He has been in so much pain for so long that they are both looking forward to the hip replacement. The Dr. will have the bone biopsied to make sure there's no cancer.
Wanda's still not up to par yet but working on it.

j: Yvonne Praetorius-Heintschel
Date: 11/25/03
Received the folling note from Yvonne's husband, Dan Heintschel

Yvonne's October cat scan showed a small cancerous nodule on her upper right lung.  It is not a return of her previous small cell cancer. It is operable. After a pet scan in November, it was determined to be her only area of cancer.  On Dec 8, her surgeon is going to operate to remove the cancer. Unfortunately, he going to have to remove at least a 1/3 of her right lung.  Yvonne's attitude is great. She is prepared for the operation and the 5-10 days she will be in M. D.Anderson Hospital.  As a matter of interest, her surgeon told she overcame 1 in 10,000  odds in surviving her bout with the small cell cancer. Yvonne is strong and there in no doubt she will overcome the new cancer. I will keep you posted on the operation.  Again, thanks to all of her friends and classmates for their prayers.  Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Sincerely, Dan Heintschel

bj: Yvonne Praetorius-Heintschel - More Good news!
Date: 3/30/03

Received an update on Yvonne Praetorius from her husband Dan Heintschel. Sounds Excellent! She'll probably be kissing her hair dresser in a few weeks.

Yvonne is doing great and is in the process of gaining back the 17 pounds she lost during the chemo and radiation treatments. Also, her energy level is up.  Probably, her biggest concern is her hair. It is growing very slowly.  About an inch on the top (received the most radiation) and two inches on the sides. It is dark and wavy. She is looking forward to going to a hair dresser again.  In mid April, she goes in for another check -up.  Will let you know the results. She wants to thank you and other classmates who have supported her with e-mail or phone calls.

Note from Dan Heintschel about Yvonne
Approximately one month ago, Yvonne completed her chemo and radiation therapy. Last week she was told by her doctors, that her lung cancer had been reduced to a small scar.  Both doctors were exuberant over the treatment results. They did say that she had a very agressive cancer that could come back. Starting in Jan 03, she will be checked every 3 months for the necessity of further treatment. Yvonne is doing  well as she slowly over  comes the side effects of chemo and radiation therapy. We want to thank everyone for their prayers.  Sincerely, Dan

Received following note from Gerogia Burwick-Sutterfield.

I received a note from William Sherman's sister.  She said that William had a heart attack this past Tuesday.  He is doing OK at this time.  She had talked to him and he sounded like he was in pretty good spirits.  He is not supposed to talk too much and is not supposed to exert himself too much.  He can walk around for five minutes each morning and each evening for exercise.  He came home Friday night and if he takes care of himself like he should for a while, everything will be OK.
The family requests no telephones calls for now.

The following is from Dan Heintschel, Yvonne Praetorius husband

Hi Asa Ray, Thanks for asking about Yvonne. After her first series of chemo therapy which lasted for nine weeks, the doctor was pleased and excited, as was Yvonne and I. Two very small areas of cancer on her brain were dissolved and the lung cancer was greatly reduced. On Aug 7, the doctor started a very aggressive treatment of chemo and radiation combined.  The chemo consist of 3 cycles given every three weeks over a nine week period. The radiation consist of 37 treatments. The first 25 radiation treatment are given to the lungs twice a day, five days a week. Then to eliminate any small cancer cells that might be floating in the brain, she will be given 12 one a day treatments to the brain. THe doctors keep Yvonne very busy.  Today, she had a 7am lung radiation, a 10am doctors appt., a noon simulation to make a cast for her head radiation and at 215pm another lung radiation.  Yvonne has maintained her weight and has a terrific positive attitude. She and her doctors have no doubt they are going to win this battle with cancer.   Again, thanks for asking about Yvonne.  Sincerely, Dan

The following note was receive from Dan Heintschel, Yvonne's husband.
Yvonne wants to thank you for all the information you have sent regarding classmates.  Most of it is very exciting and some is depressing.  She wanted to let you and  other classmates, know that when she took her annual physical in Mar 02, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Since then, she has been receiving chemotherapy at M. D. Anderson. In May and June, she had 16 hrs of chemo each month.  This week , she will receive 3rd and final chemo treatment .  BY the end of July, she should have a report on the effect the treatments had on the cancer.  Her doctor is very positive about everything. Yvonne also has a very positive attitude. She will not be able to attend this months get together, but hopes to attend the next one.  Best Wishes. Dan Heintschel.
I know our thoughts are with her and wish her the b
